follow Timing is everything for farmers, and it’s especially true for farmers like us that squeeze the most out of small acreage by using the same beds multiple times in one season. This week we have a production gap from our tiller breaking down a month ago. We weren’t able to direct seed or transplant into newly tilled beds for two weeks. For the first time since May, we didn’t have any salad, our biggest, most consistent, and most popular revenue for our restaurant accounts, to harvest. We also didn’t have any heads of lettuce to harvest for the veggie CSA members, some of whom may be rejoicing at the change of pace! Fortunately, we’ll have salad again next week, though I don’t think the head lettuce will be ready quite yet.

No salad harvest meant an extra half day to catch up on cleaning up the field. We removed encroaching grass from the paths in our big greenhouse, weeded the winter squash, shaped the next beds we’ll be seeding and planting, and sprinkled diatomaceous earth on our fall brassica plants. For the non-geologists out there, diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring material composed of billions of microscopic fossilized organisms, called diatoms. Diatoms are a type of algae with a hard shell made of silica. Farmers use diatomaceous earth to abrade the guts of pests like flea beetles that like to munch on the veggies we’re growing. In this way, we can control their population using a natural, inert substance (silica) that washes right off. Silica is also the second most common element in the Earth’s crust, so using it doesn’t have a significant effect on our soil composition like fertilizers do.

While you wait for those beautiful lettuce heads, you can enjoy the variety we have available right now. The only “new” item this week is the storage kohlrabi in the large shares, but you’ll find lots of popular and delicious things to enjoy, including carrots, beets, and tomatoes! Our tomato plants are covered in almost-ripe green tomatoes, so we’re hoping for a big harvest for you next week.
