The Backyard Gardens farm is a market garden operation located by the beautiful Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon. We supply quality produce to our rural community through a CSA, farmers markets, direct sales, restaurants, and several retail stores.
Started in 2002 on a neighbor’s lot—literally in our backyard—the farm has grown to include several plots, currently totaling approximately two acres. All of our gardens benefit from the rich soils and clean water of the Wallowa Valley.
At Backyard Gardens, we aim to provide our community with high quality, nutritious, and beautiful produce that is grown in an environmentally friendly manner. We use ecologically sound practices, such as crop rotations, natural amendments, and cover crops, and never use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. We have two rototillers and a weedwacker, and occasionally borrow a tractor, but the rest of our work is done by hand. We share a small greenhouse and borrow another one for starting seedlings. Though not certified organic, the farm attempts to follow the guidelines for organic growing practices.
We grow a wide variety of crops, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, and plant starts, and are especially known for our fresh salad mixes and greens. Our produce is available from June through October through our CSAs, at the Wallowa County Farmers’ Markets, via email or phone orders, and at Ruby Peak Naturals and Mt. Joseph Family Foods. Backyard Gardens produce is also featured at local restaurants including Terminal Gravity, Mutiny Brewing, Red Horse Coffee Traders, and The Rimrock Inn.
